5 reasons to move to Helston
Jul 2020

South West Cornwall has some of the county’s wildest weather and most beautiful and dramatic scenery. Just inland, at the northern end of the Lizard Peninsula, lies the historic town of Helston - here’s why you should include it on your property search.

1. Affordability

While sought-after Cornish coastal towns such as Fowey will set you back an average of £467,958 for a detached property, detached properties in Helston sell for the much more affordable average price of £276,632. The average overall property price in Helston is £208,758 – cheaper than nearby Porthleven but within a short drive of the picturesque fishing village and its excellent cafes and restaurants.

2. Family-friendly attractions

Helston is an excellent location for young families, boasting the beautifully maintained Coronation Park and boating lake that offers rowing boat hire during the summer months and plenty of hungry ducks to feed year-round. Flambards (Cornwall’s largest theme park) and the National Seal Sanctuary in Gweek are just a short driving distance away, as is RNAS Culdrose, which has a public viewing area from which to watch the planes and helicopters landing.

3. Great schools

Helston and the surrounding communities benefit from excellent educational establishments for all ages – among the primary schools, Park Eglos has an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating and among the secondary schools, Mullion School and Helston Community College (before it became part of a multi-academy trust) both received ‘outstanding’ Ofsted reports.

4. Beautiful local scenery

The Lizard Peninsula is one of the UK’s 46 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, enjoying the same status and protection as a National Park. With a diverse array of plants, birds, butterflies, and marine life to enjoy, as well as archaeological discoveries dating back to the Iron Age, coastal walks around the peninsula will delight nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, artists, and local historians alike. Closer to town, the National Trust’s Penrose Estate offers beautiful circular walks to Loe Bar and Gunwalloe, and if you’re feeling energetic, you can participate in Penrose parkrun every Saturday at 9am.

5. Community spirit

You haven’t truly experienced what Helston has to offer until you’ve joined the town’s annual Flora Day celebrations. Held every year on May 8th, residents deck out the town with bluebells, gorse, and laurel leaves and line the streets to watch (or participate in) the lively festivities. If you prefer more sedentary entertainment, the town’s Blue Anchor pub is one of the oldest inns in Britain that maintains a working brewery – join fellow ale enthusiasts for a Friday night pint of Spingo and a game of skittles or live music event in the old alley at the back of the pub.

If you are interested in seeing one of our Lizard Peninsula or Helston properties, contact Lillicrap Chilcott today to arrange a viewing. One of our friendly team members will be happy to answer any of your questions.
